About this quiz

How it works

Figures

This quiz matches your answers with the documented positions of 33 American presidents, from the founders to Joe Biden. Each one is profiled on the same issues you answer: taxes and health care, big business, tariffs, states' rights, civil liberties in an emergency, religion in public life, immigration and America's role in the world.

It is a match on issues, not a ranking and not an endorsement. Presidents of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries lived in a very different country, so read the closest match as the president whose stated positions point the same way as yours, then open their page for the full record, sources and critics.

Every statement comes from the bank of the 12 Axes Political Test and is scored the same way, and the match uses the same formula as its historical twin. Read the full methodology.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which presidents are in the quiz?

Washington, John Adams, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, John Quincy Adams, Fillmore, Pierce, Buchanan, Lincoln, Grant, Hayes, Cleveland, Theodore Roosevelt, Taft, Wilson, Harding, Coolidge, Hoover, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, George H. W. Bush, Clinton, George W. Bush, Obama and Biden. Each has a full, sourced profile in our historical figures section.

Why are some presidents missing?

Profiles cover presidents who have died or have retired from active politics, so a president still active in politics is not included. William Henry Harrison, Tyler, Polk, Taylor, Andrew Johnson, Garfield and Arthur have profiles, but too few documented positions on the quiz's issues for a fair match, often because their time in office was short. Jackson, Van Buren, Benjamin Harrison and McKinley are never a result, because their governments caused mass civilian deaths, from the Trail of Tears and Wounded Knee to the Philippine-American War. Their pages stay on the site with the full record.

How is my match calculated?

Each statement moves you on one of 10 political axes. Your positions are compared with each president's profile on the same axes, and the closest is your match. The percentage shows closeness, not a probability.

Does a match mean I am like this person?

No. The match compares your answers with where each of the presidents stood on the same issues. It says nothing about character, personal conduct or everything they did in office. Every figure page sets out what admirers and critics say.

Are my answers saved?

Your result is saved anonymously for statistics: the scores and the closest match, with no name or email. Individual answers are kept only if you tick the optional research box. The share link holds your scores, never your answers.

Is the quiz partisan?

No. Statements describe policies without naming parties or people, and half are worded so that agreeing moves you the other way. Presidents from both parties, and from the parties before them, can come out on top.
