The political spectrum is the classic way to describe politics: a single line from left to right. In this quiz the main line measures economic views, from equality and public provision on the left to free markets and private enterprise on the right.
Four extra statements add a second, thinner line for social views, from progressive to traditional, because two people at the same economic point can disagree a lot about social change.
Every statement comes from the same bank as our full tests and is scored the same way, so your quiz result points in the same direction as the Political Compass Test. Read the full methodology.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What is the political spectrum?
The political spectrum is a way of arranging political views along a line from left to right. It usually describes economic views: the left favors equality and public provision, the right favors free markets and private enterprise.
Why is there a second line for social views?
Economic and social views do not always go together. The social line shows whether you lean progressive or traditional on questions like marriage and gender, separately from your economic position.
How is my position calculated?
Each statement is keyed to the economic or social axis, with half of each worded in the opposite direction. Your answers are averaged into a 0 to 100 position, where 50 is the center.
Is one line enough to describe my politics?
Not really, which is why we also offer the Political Compass Test, a two-axis map, and the Political Values Test, which scores four separate axes. This quiz is a quick first look.
Do I need an account?
No. The quiz is free and needs no signup or email. Your score is saved anonymously for statistics, and individual answers only with your opt-in.
