FAQ
Questions, answered.
The short answers to what people ask most about the tests, results, privacy, group maps, the report, ads and neutrality.
01
The tests
Which test should I take?
For a quick first look, the Political Compass Test (48 statements, about 6 minutes) puts you on the classic two-axis map. The Political Values Test (89 statements, about 12 minutes) gives four separate scores. The 12 Axes Political Test scores 12 narrower axes and shows your closest ideologies, parties and historical figures.
Compare the testsHow long does each test take?
The Compass test takes about 6 minutes and the Values test about 12. The 12 Axes test has three lengths: Quick (36 statements, about 5 minutes), Standard (72, about 10) and Deep (162, about 25).
Do I need an account?
No. Every test and every free result works without an account or an email address.
Can I skip a statement?
Yes. A skipped statement is left out of your score. Choosing neutral is different: it counts as an answer and pulls that axis a little toward the center.
How answers are scoredWhat are the quizzes?
Short quizzes of a few minutes each on a single question, such as whether you lean liberal or conservative, or which US president your views match most closely. There are 12 of them. They are lighter than the full tests and are a good warm-up.

Results and matches
How are my scores calculated?
Each statement has a weight on one or more axes. Agreeing moves you toward that weight, disagreeing moves you away, and stronger answers move you further. Each axis score is the weighted total divided by the largest total possible, scaled to -100 to +100. The exact formulas are published.
Read the methodologyWhat does a match percentage mean?
It is a similarity score based on the distance between your scores and a profile on the same axes. 100% means the same position on every axis. It is not a probability, and it is not a recommendation to support anyone.
How matching worksWhy is my result different from another test?
Each test asks different statements and measures a different number of axes. The 12 Axes test averages narrower axes, so its compass point can differ a little from the Compass test. Your mood and how you read a statement on the day also matter.
Can I compare my result with a friend?
Yes. Every result has a compare link. When your friend takes the test through it, their result page shows both of you side by side. The link carries scores only, never answers.
Is this a scientific test?
No. The tests are carefully built and openly scored, but they are not validated like academic survey scales. Treat the result as a starting point for thinking and talking, not as a label.
Limits of the tests03
Privacy
Are my answers stored?
Your scores are saved anonymously to show your result. Your individual answers are stored only if you tick the optional research consent box, which is unchecked by default. They are never sold.
Privacy policyWhat does a result link contain?
Your scores and the test you took. Never your answers, your name or your email address. Share images are drawn from the same scores.
Why do you ask my age and gender?
After a test you may see an optional step asking for an age band and gender. It has a prefer not to say choice and a Skip button. We use it only for group statistics, such as how results differ by age. Your result is the same either way.
How do I delete my data?
Write to our privacy address with the result link, group link or email address you used, and we will find and delete it. Marketing emails also have a one-click unsubscribe link.

Group maps
What is a group map?
One shared map for a group chat, a club or a class. You create it and share the link. Everyone who takes the Compass or Values test through the link and ticks the box appears as a dot, under a nickname they choose.
Make a group mapWhat can others in the group see?
Your nickname and your position on the map, plus your closest ideology on the Values test. Never your individual answers. Group pages are not listed in search engines.
Can I remove my dot or a whole group?
You can remove your own dot from the same browser you joined with. The person who created the map can close it to new members. We can also remove a dot or a group on request, at our privacy address.

Refund policyIs there a report for the 12 Axes test?

06
Ads and funding
How is the site paid for?
By display ads on free pages and the optional paid report. We take no money from any party, campaign, candidate or government.
Funding and conflictsWhere do ads appear?
On some free pages, shown by Google AdSense. Never inside a test and never above your result. In the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland we show no ads until a consent tool is in place.
Do advertisers affect the results?
No. Advertisers have no say over statements, scoring, profiles or results.
07
Neutrality
Are the tests biased?
We work hard for them not to be. Statements never name parties or politicians, every axis has statements worded in both directions, and every statement has a neutral explainer with the case for agreeing and disagreeing. The full method is published, so you can check it.
Editorial standardsWho decides where an ideology, party or figure sits?
Our editors, from reference works, official platforms and records, and documented views, with sources listed on each page. Party profiles carry an as of date. Historical figures have blank axes where there is no basis for a view.
How we build profilesWhy are there no living politicians?
For now we profile only ideologies, parties and historical figures, so the site never scores people who are in office or running today.
Is the content written with AI?
Content is drafted with AI assistance and reviewed and edited by our editors before it is published. Scoring is plain arithmetic on your answers and uses no AI.
