About this quiz
How it works

- Figures

This quiz compares your views with sourced political profiles of more than 190 leaders and thinkers, from presidents and prime ministers to the philosophers whose ideas they argued over. Each profile places the figure on the same issues you answer here: ownership, taxes and welfare, markets, democracy, crime, local power, family, religion, immigration and the world.
The match is about positions on issues only. It is not a judgment of anyone's character or record, and a historical figure's views belong to their own time. Every result links to the figure's page, with sources and what both admirers and critics say.
Every statement comes from the bank of the 12 Axes Political Test and is scored the same way, and the match uses the same formula as its historical twin. Read the full methodology.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How does the historical leader quiz work?
Each statement moves you on one of 10 political axes. Your positions are compared with the profile of every figure in our set, and the closest one, measured over the same axes, is your top match. The percentage shows how close you are, not a probability.
Who can I get?
Any of the leaders and thinkers in our historical figures section, including presidents, prime ministers, reformers and political philosophers. Figures whose profiles do not cover enough of the quiz's issues are left out so a match is never based on two or three answers.
Why are some figures never a result?
We leave out figures whose governments carried out mass killings or caused mass civilian deaths, because a quick quiz result is the wrong way to present them. Their pages stay on the site with the full record. Rulers chiefly known for mass atrocities are not in our figure set at all.
Does a match mean I am like this person?
No. The match compares your answers with where each of the historical figures stood on the same issues. It says nothing about character, personal conduct or everything they did in office. Every figure page sets out what admirers and critics say.
Are my answers saved?
Your result is saved anonymously for statistics: the scores and the closest match, with no name or email. Individual answers are kept only if you tick the optional research box. The share link holds your scores, never your answers.
How accurate is it?
Twelve statements give a quick, rough match. The 12 Axes Political Test scores all 12 axes with up to 162 statements and matches you against ideologies, parties and the same historical figures.
