About this quiz

How it works

Figures

This quiz matches your answers with the documented positions of 9 German chancellors, from Otto von Bismarck in the German Empire to Angela Merkel. Each one is profiled on the same issues you answer: selling state businesses, free prices and the minimum wage, health care, strong leadership, privacy, marriage, religion in public life, refugees, tariffs and military alliances.

It is a match on issues, not a ranking and not an endorsement. Bismarck served an emperor, not an elected parliament, so read your result as the chancellor whose stated positions point the same way as yours, then open their page for the full record, sources and critics.

Every statement comes from the bank of the 12 Axes Political Test and is scored the same way, and the match uses the same formula as its historical twin. Read the full methodology.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which chancellors are in the quiz?

Otto von Bismarck, Konrad Adenauer, Ludwig Erhard, Kurt Georg Kiesinger, Willy Brandt, Helmut Schmidt, Helmut Kohl, Gerhard Schröder and Angela Merkel. Each has a full, sourced profile in our historical figures section.

Why are some chancellors missing?

Gustav Stresemann has a profile, but too few documented positions on the quiz's issues for a fair match: he led the government for only a few months in 1923 and is known mainly as foreign minister. Friedrich Ebert is never a result, because his government had the Spartacist uprising of January 1919 crushed by force, and around 170 people were killed. His page stays on the site with the full record. Most chancellors of the Empire and the Weimar Republic do not have a profile yet, chancellors after Angela Merkel are not included, and rulers chiefly known for mass atrocities, Adolf Hitler among them, are not in our figure set at all.

How is my match calculated?

Each statement moves you on one of 10 political axes. Your positions are compared with each chancellor's profile on the same axes, and the closest is your match. The percentage shows closeness, not a probability.

Does a match mean I am like this person?

No. The match compares your answers with where each of the chancellors stood on the same issues. It says nothing about character, personal conduct or everything they did in office. Every figure page sets out what admirers and critics say.

Are my answers saved?

Your result is saved anonymously for statistics: the scores and the closest match, with no name or email. Individual answers are kept only if you tick the optional research box. The share link holds your scores, never your answers.

Is the quiz partisan?

No. Statements describe policies without naming parties or people, and half are worded so that agreeing moves you the other way. Christian Democrat and Social Democrat chancellors, and Bismarck before the modern parties, can all come out on top.
