About this quiz

How it works

Figures

This quiz matches your answers with the documented positions of 8 Brazilian presidents, civilian and military, from Getúlio Vargas to Michel Temer. Each one is profiled on the same issues you answer: oil and natural resources, economic planning, taxes on high incomes, elections in a crisis, crime, Brasília against the states, nuclear power, national pride, foreign ownership, open trade and Brazil's place in the world.

It is a match on issues, not a ranking and not an endorsement. Some of these presidents were elected and some came to power through a coup or under military rule, so read your result as the president whose stated positions point the same way as yours, then open their page for the full record, sources and critics.

Every statement comes from the bank of the 12 Axes Political Test and is scored the same way, and the match uses the same formula as its historical twin. Read the full methodology.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which presidents are in the quiz?

Getúlio Vargas, Eurico Gaspar Dutra, Juscelino Kubitschek, Humberto de Alencar Castelo Branco, Fernando Collor de Mello, Fernando Henrique Cardoso, Dilma Rousseff and Michel Temer. Each has a full, sourced profile in our historical figures section.

Why are some presidents missing?

Jânio Quadros, João Goulart, José Sarney and Itamar Franco have profiles, but too few documented positions on the quiz's issues for a fair match. Ernesto Geisel is never a result, because political prisoners were killed in military custody under his government. His page stays on the site with the full record. Presidents still active in politics, such as Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Jair Bolsonaro, are not profiled.

Why can a military president come out?

The quiz leaves out presidents whose governments carried out mass killings, such as Ernesto Geisel. Humberto de Alencar Castelo Branco, the first president of the military regime, stays in: his profile documents purges and reports of torture in his term, and places most of the regime's killings under his successors. A match with him, as with anyone, is about positions on issues, and his page sets out the full record.

How is my match calculated?

Each statement moves you on one of 10 political axes. Your positions are compared with each president's profile on the same axes, and the closest is your match. The percentage shows closeness, not a probability.

Does a match mean I am like this person?

No. The match compares your answers with where each of the presidents stood on the same issues. It says nothing about character, personal conduct or everything they did in office. Every figure page sets out what admirers and critics say.

Are my answers saved?

Your result is saved anonymously for statistics: the scores and the closest match, with no name or email. Individual answers are kept only if you tick the optional research box. The share link holds your scores, never your answers.
